sign up validation

not sure what the difference between what is posted at videoshow.vertigo.com (and http://filmsforlearning.org/) and what i am downloading from codeplex, but my sign up control keeps throwing an error instead of giving me the typical validation (in the sign up window when not filling out username, email, or password: "Please fix these so we can get you signed up: The username was blank.The password was blank.The e-mail address not valid.").

i just get the asp.net error ("the username is not valid, The password supplied is invalid", etc.). before i spend way to much time looking for the issue with the validation, is there a quick fix for this?

i found what the problem is. for some reason in signup.ascx (around line 54) has:
$get("ErrorMessage").innerText = error;
instead of:
$get("<%= ErrorMessage.ClientID %>").innerText = error;
